The art of Damascus steel, once lost for centuries, is a technique for pattern welding two types of stainless steel into a single bar, from which each ring is cut. Each ring is acid etched to showcase the layered grain lines that mark the boundaries between the two steels -- the steels each have a different carbon content and react at different rates with the acid, hence the swirling shades of gray.
