About This Design: What is Damascus steel? What does it mean to acid etch a ring? Damascus steel is actually a type of pattern welding that fuses two pieces of different steels together into alternating layers. Fusing the steels then folding them over creates a billet with double the original number of layers -- a process that can be repeated indefinitely to create as many layers as desired. The layers can also be further manipulated to create rippling striations like those visible in this photo. But what really gives these Damascus Rings their distinctive appearance is the acid etching. The reason is the steels in this ring each have a different amount of carbon and each react differently with acid as a result.
