 A tradition lost for centuries gets an edgy reboot and returns with a vengeance in the hypnotic style of this Grooved Edge Damascus Ring! The pun was sort-of intended, but the clean modern lines and crisp shape of this new classic is entirely deliberate. The center of these Damascus Rings features a conventional dome profile, but either side is flattened down to create two crisp, grooved edges. The completed piece is then submersed in an acid bath to finish the ring. The result? An interesting shape that really highlights the contrasting differences between the two pieces of fused steel. About This Design: So what's the tradition that was "lost for centuries?" That tradition was the art of Damascus steel, a method of metalworking that once produced some of the finest and most sought-after blades and weapons in the world. Using a blend of steels primarily shipped from Southern India, bladesmiths in Damascus, Syria were able to create folded bars of two or more steels that could then be carved into objects with fantastic rippling patterns just like those seen on this Damascus Ring. It is believed that over the centuries the special Wootz steel being imported from India was lost, and without the right steel no blacksmith could produce Damascus jewelry or weapons. The process, itself a closely guarded secret, died out with them. Recently, however, researchers and engineers have recreated many of the properties of Wootz steel and Damascus-style pieces are once again on the market!
