Welcome to the new Steel Age.
The lost art of steel production returns with a vengeance in this Steel and Copper Ring. By combining legendary metalworking with a pure copper band, this unsurpassed work of wearable art is made to grab your attention and keep it.
The base of this unique ring is welded steel, which as we've mentioned before, is an ancient and formerly lost method of folding and refolding layers of steel to create a hybrid steel of near mythical power. The metal in this ring has been acid etched to highlight the layers in the steel. Running off-center around the ring is a copper inlay for an attractive, brassy contrast.
Featured here at 7mm wide with a 2mm-wide copper inlay. Additional widths are available. The width of the inlay will be increased to match the size you choose for your ring. Optional personalized engraving is available on the inside of the band for a small fee. Purchase of this item includes free ground shipping to anywhere in the USA.
More about this design:
What we know today as welded steel likely originated somewhere in southern or western India before making its way up to modern day Syria. Although its exact beginnings are unknown, the distinctive look and quality of steel have made it a point of fascination for blacksmiths and enthusiasts for thousands of years. To make welded steel, two pieces of stainless steel are forged together and then carefully folded and then refolded into billets. Once folded, the steels can never be separated, yet you can see where each layer met and melded together. Slight variations in the carbon levels in each steel cause parts of the metal to darken at different rates when exposed to an acid bath, resulting in the stunning patterns you see here.
Please note: The copper in this ring may develop a patina that will oxidize and subtly change color over time. This process is natural and is beyond our control, but is also a part of what makes these rings so special. Also, the acid finish shown here appears darker in this image. The actual color of this ring may vary slightly, with more of a dark, flat gray against lighter contrasts.
